Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold of dimension nn with tangent bundle TMTM. A frame at p∈Mp \in M is an ordered basis e=(e1,…,en)e = (e_1, \ldots, e_n) of the tangent space TpMT_pM. The frame bundle of MM is the set F(M)={(p,e):p∈M, e a frame at p}.F(M) = \set{(p, e) : p \in M, \ e \text{ a frame at } p}. It comes with the projection π(p,e)=p\pi(p, e) = p and the right action of the general linear group GL(n,ℝ)GL(n, \R) given by (p,e)⋅g=(p,eg),(eg)j=∑i=1ngij ei.(p, e) \cdot g = (p, e g), \qquad (e g)_j = \sum_{i=1}^{n} g_{ij} \, e_i. For a chart (U,x)(U, x) of MM and a frame ee at p∈Up \in U, let AA be the matrix with ej=∑iAij ∂/∂xi∣pe_j = \sum_i A_{ij} \, \partial/\partial x^i|_p. F(M)F(M) carries the smooth structure for which each map (p,e)↦(p,A)(p, e) \mapsto (p, A) is a diffeomorphism π−1(U)→U×GL(n,ℝ)\pi^{-1}(U) \to U \times GL(n, \R). With this structure F(M)F(M) is a principal GL(n,ℝ)GL(n, \R)-bundle over MM.

Remarks

For M=ℝnM = \R^n, a frame at pp is the same as an invertible matrix, so F(ℝn)=ℝn×GL(n,ℝ)F(\R^n) = \R^n \times GL(n, \R). Check of the action: (eg)h=e(gh)(e g) h = e (g h), because ((eg)h)k=∑jhjk∑igijei=∑i(gh)ikei((eg)h)_k = \sum_j h_{jk} \sum_i g_{ij} e_i = \sum_i (gh)_{ik} e_i.

A tuple (e1,…,en)(e_1, \ldots, e_n) of tangent vectors at pp that is linearly dependent, such as e1=e2e_1 = e_2, is not a frame and is not a point of F(M)F(M).

If MM is a Riemannian manifold, the orthonormal frames form the orthonormal frame bundle, a principal O(n)O(n)-bundle. The same construction applies to any vector bundle EE of rank kk and gives a principal GL(k,ℝ)GL(k, \R)-bundle.
