Definition
Let be or . A Fréchet algebra over is an associative algebra over with a topology such that:
- with this topology is a Fréchet space, that is, a complete metrizable locally convex space;
- the multiplication , , is jointly continuous.
Let be an increasing sequence of seminorms defining the topology. Then condition 2 holds if and only if for each there are and with for all .
Remarks
The algebra is called locally multiplicatively convex (or m-convex) if the topology is given by seminorms with . Some authors include this condition in the definition. Every Banach algebra is a Fréchet algebra, with the single seminorm given by the norm.
Example: , the continuous complex functions on , with . Each is a seminorm with , and the sequence is increasing. Convergence for all is uniform convergence on compact sets, and a locally uniform limit of continuous functions is continuous, so is complete. So is an m-convex Fréchet algebra.
Non-example: the polynomials with the same seminorms satisfy every condition except completeness in clause 1. The Taylor polynomials of form a Cauchy sequence for every , but their limit is not a polynomial.
