Fredholm module
Builds on C*-algebraCompact operator
Definition
Let be a C*-algebra. Let be a separable Hilbert space and a -representation. An odd Fredholm module over is a triple with such that for all the operators are compact. An even Fredholm module is such a triple together with a grading, a self-adjoint unitary , such that for all and .
Remarks
Example: let act on by multiplication, and let , where is the orthogonal projection onto the Hardy space spanned by , . Then is a self-adjoint unitary, and is compact for continuous (it is of finite rank for trigonometric polynomials), so this is an odd Fredholm module. Non-example: with on , let be the flip . Then is a self-adjoint unitary, but , and this is not compact, because multiplication by a nonzero continuous function on is never compact. The module is degenerate if the three operators above are zero for all ; degenerate modules represent zero in K-homology.
