Definition
Let and be Banach spaces, and let be a bounded linear map. The map is a Fredholm operator if both of the following hold.
Remarks
If is Fredholm, then its image is automatically closed in . Example: let be the right shift on , . Its kernel is , and its image is , of codimension , so is Fredholm. Non-example: the diagonal operator on has kernel . Its image contains every finitely supported sequence, so it is dense, but it misses , so it is not closed. By the previous remark, the image of a bounded operator with finite-dimensional cokernel is closed, so clause 2 fails. If is a compact operator, then is Fredholm. Every linear map between finite-dimensional spaces is Fredholm.
