Definition
Let be a variety of algebras, regarded as a category with homomorphisms, and let be its forgetful functor. A free functor for is a functor that is left adjoint to . Explicitly, comes with maps , natural in , with the following property. For every algebra and every map , there is a unique homomorphism with .
Remarks
Such a functor exists for every variety: is the free algebra of on , and sends a map to the unique homomorphism that extends . It is unique up to a unique natural isomorphism, as is any left adjoint. More generally, a left adjoint of any forgetful functor is called a free functor.
Example: for the variety of monoids, is the monoid of finite words in under concatenation, and sends to the one-letter word . A map into a monoid extends to , and this is the only homomorphism extending .
Non-example: the functor from sets to groups that sends every set to the trivial group is not a free functor. For and the map into , the only homomorphism from the trivial group to sends everything to , so it does not extend .
