Definition
Let be a set. A free lattice on is a lattice together with a map with the following property. For every lattice and every map there is exactly one lattice homomorphism with .
Remarks
A free lattice on exists and is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with the maps from ; it is written . One construction takes the set of lattice terms built from the letters of with and . It identifies two terms and when the identity holds in every lattice. The map is injective, and is generated by as a lattice. Example: for , with . Every lattice term in and reduces to one of these four by the lattice laws. These four are distinct because they are distinct in the lattice of subsets of under , . Non-example: the two-element chain with , with the identity, is not free on . The map with and into the subsets of has no extension , since a lattice homomorphism is monotone and . For , the free lattice is infinite.
