Definition
Let be a field and let be a set. A free Lie algebra on over is a Lie algebra over together with a map with the following universal property. For every Lie algebra over and every map , there is a unique Lie algebra homomorphism with .
Remarks
The universal property determines up to a unique isomorphism compatible with . One construction: is the Lie subalgebra generated by inside the free associative algebra , with the commutator bracket.
Example: for , the free Lie algebra is the line with zero bracket. Check: a map sends to some , and the linear map is a homomorphism because and . It is the only one, since a linear map on is fixed by its value at .
Non-example: for , the abelian Lie algebra with and is not free on . The map to with and , where and , has no extension: a homomorphism would send to .
For , the elements , and are nonzero in and linearly independent.
