Definition
Let be a concrete category with forgetful functor , and let be a set. A free object on is an object of with a map of sets with this universal property. For every object of and every map , there is a unique morphism with .
Remarks
A free object on is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with . If every set has a free object , then is a functor and is left adjoint to .
Example: in the category of groups, the free group of reduced words in , with sending to the one-letter word, is a free object. Given , the morphism sends a reduced word to , and it is the only homomorphism extending .
Non-example: the group with sending the point of to is not free on . For and , there is no homomorphism with , since .
