Builds on GroupGroup homomorphism
Definition
Let be a family of groups, with for after relabelling. A reduced word is a finite sequence , with , such that:
- each is a non-identity element of some ;
- consecutive letters lie in different groups: for .
The free product is the set of reduced words. The product of two words is their concatenation followed by reduction. To reduce, replace two adjacent letters of the same by their product in , and delete the letter if it is the identity. Repeat until the word is reduced. For two groups it is written .
Remarks
The product is well defined and associative, the empty word is the identity, and each embeds as the words of length at most . Equivalently, is the coproduct of the in the category of groups. That is, for every group and homomorphisms , there is a unique homomorphism restricting to each . Example: is the free group of rank . With generators of the first factor and of the second, its reduced words are the reduced words in . Another example: is isomorphic to the modular group . Non-example: the direct product is not the free product . In the element is the identity, while in it is a reduced word of length . Given presentations and with , one has .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
