Free product of algebras
Builds on Variety of algebrasHomomorphism
Definition
Let be a variety of algebras and let be a family of algebras in . A free product of the family in is an algebra in with homomorphisms such that the following holds. For every algebra in and all homomorphisms , there is a unique homomorphism with for all .
Remarks
The free product exists for every family in a variety, and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with the maps . It is the coproduct of the family in the category of algebras of . Some authors require in addition that every be injective.
Example: in the variety of abelian groups, with and is a free product. Given into an abelian group , the map is a homomorphism because is abelian, it satisfies , and it is the only such map since .
Non-example: in the variety of all groups, with the two coordinate inclusions is not a free product of and . Take sending to the transpositions and . A homomorphism with would send the commuting elements and to these two transpositions, which do not commute.
In the variety of groups, the free product of a family is the group of reduced words in the factors.
