Definition

Let a finite group GG act transitively on a finite set Ω\Omega with ∣Ω∣≥2\abs{\Omega} \ge 2. GG is a Frobenius group (for this action) if:

  1. no element g≠eg \ne e of GG fixes two distinct points of Ω\Omega, and
  2. some element g≠eg \ne e of GG fixes a point of Ω\Omega.

Remarks

Equivalently, a finite group GG is a Frobenius group if it has a subgroup HH with {e}≠H≠G\set{e} \ne H \ne G and H∩gHg−1={e}H \cap gHg^{-1} = \set{e} for all g∈G∖Hg \in G \setminus H. Then HH is a point stabiliser for the action on the left cosets of HH, and it is called a Frobenius complement. The set KK of elements that fix no point, together with ee, is the Frobenius kernel; by Frobenius's theorem it is a normal subgroup.

Example: the group of maps x↦ax+bx \mapsto ax + b with a≠0a \ne 0, acting on a finite field 𝔽q\F_q with q≥3q \ge 3. If a≠1a \ne 1, the equation ax+b=xax + b = x has exactly one solution, and if a=1a = 1 and b≠0b \ne 0 it has none, so clause 1 holds. The map x↦axx \mapsto ax with a≠0,1a \ne 0, 1 fixes 00, so clause 2 holds. For q=3q = 3 this is S3S_3 acting on 33 points. For odd n≥3n \ge 3, the dihedral group of order 2n2n acting on the corners of a regular nn-gon is also a Frobenius group.

Non-example: S4S_4 acting on {1,2,3,4}\set{1, 2, 3, 4}. The transposition (1 2)(1\,2) fixes the two points 33 and 44, so clause 1 fails. The cyclic group generated by (1 2 3)(1\,2\,3) acting on {1,2,3}\set{1, 2, 3} satisfies clause 1 but fails clause 2.
