Definition

Let 𝕂\mathbb{K} be ℝ\R or ℂ\C, let m,n≥1m, n \ge 1, and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be an m×nm \times n matrix over 𝕂\mathbb{K}. The Frobenius norm of AA is ∥A∥F=∑i=1m∑j=1n∣aij∣2.\norm{A}_F = \sqrt{\sum_{i=1}^{m} \sum_{j=1}^{n} \abs{a_{ij}}^2}.

Remarks

Equivalently, ∥A∥F=tr⁡(A∗A)\norm{A}_F = \sqrt{\tr(A^* A)}, where A∗A^* is the conjugate transpose and tr⁡\tr is the trace. If σ1,…,σr\sigma_1, \ldots, \sigma_r are the nonzero singular values of AA, then ∥A∥F2=σ12+⋯+σr2\norm{A}_F^2 = \sigma_1^2 + \cdots + \sigma_r^2. Example: for A=(1234)A = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{pmatrix}, ∥A∥F=30\norm{A}_F = \sqrt{30}. The Frobenius norm is a submultiplicative matrix norm, by the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality, and ∥UAV∥F=∥A∥F\norm{UAV}_F = \norm{A}_F for unitary UU and VV. It is not an operator norm when n≥2n \ge 2: every operator norm gives ∥In∥=1\norm{I_n} = 1, but ∥In∥F=n\norm{I_n}_F = \sqrt{n}.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
