Statement

Let GG be a finite group and let HH be a subgroup of GG. For a finite group KK and functions α,β ⁣:K→ℂ\alpha, \beta \colon K \to \C write ⟨α,β⟩K=1∣K∣∑k∈Kα(k)β(k)‾\ip{\alpha}{\beta}_K = \frac{1}{\abs{K}} \sum_{k \in K} \alpha(k) \overline{\beta(k)}. Let θ\theta be a class function on HH, let ψ\psi be a class function on GG, and let Ind⁡HGθ\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \theta be the induced class function. Then ⟨Ind⁡HGθ,ψ⟩G=⟨θ,ψ∣H⟩H,\ip{\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \theta}{\psi}_G = \ip{\theta}{\psi|_H}_H, where ψ∣H\psi|_H is the restriction of ψ\psi to HH.

Remarks

The proof is a direct computation: insert the formula Ind⁡HGθ(g)=1∣H∣∑x∈G, x−1gx∈Hθ(x−1gx)\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \theta(g) = \frac{1}{\abs{H}}\sum_{x \in G,\ x^{-1}gx \in H} \theta(x^{-1}gx), substitute k=x−1gxk = x^{-1} g x, and use that ψ\psi is constant on conjugacy classes. The module form holds over any field FF: for an F[H]F[H]-module WW and an F[G]F[G]-module VV, Hom⁡G(Ind⁡HGW,V)≅Hom⁡H(W,V∣H)\Hom_G(\operatorname{Ind}_H^G W, V) \cong \Hom_H(W, V|_H) as vector spaces. Example: for irreducible characters θ\theta of HH and ψ\psi of GG, the multiplicity of ψ\psi in Ind⁡HGθ\operatorname{Ind}_H^G \theta equals the multiplicity of θ\theta in ψ∣H\psi|_H. For H={1}H = \set{1} and θ\theta trivial this gives that each irreducible ψ\psi occurs ψ(1)\psi(1) times in the regular representation.

For a student

In the language of categories, induction is left adjoint to restriction. The formula is used constantly to decompose induced characters, for instance in the proofs of Brauer's theorem on induced characters and Artin's induction theorem. It also gives Mackey-type computations and is the basis of Clifford theory.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
