Definition

Let kk be an algebraically closed field and let XX be an algebraic variety over kk. Consider pairs (U,f)(U, f) where U⊆XU \subseteq X is a nonempty open subset and ff is a regular function on UU. Two pairs (U,f)(U, f) and (V,g)(V, g) are equivalent if f=gf = g on U∩VU \cap V. The function field k(X)k(X) of XX is the set of equivalence classes, called rational functions on XX, with the operations [(U,f)]+[(V,g)]=[(U∩V,f+g)],[(U,f)]⋅[(V,g)]=[(U∩V,fg)].[(U, f)] + [(V, g)] = [(U \cap V, f + g)], \qquad [(U, f)] \cdot [(V, g)] = [(U \cap V, fg)].

Remarks

Since XX is irreducible, U∩VU \cap V is nonempty and dense, and two regular functions that agree on a nonempty open subset of U∩VU \cap V agree on all of U∩VU \cap V. This makes the relation transitive and the operations well defined. k(X)k(X) is a field: if f≠0f \ne 0 on UU, then 1/f1/f is regular on the nonempty open set U∖V(f)U \setminus V(f).

If XX is an affine variety, then k(X)k(X) is the field of fractions of the coordinate ring k[X]k[X]. If UU is a nonempty open subset of XX, then k(U)=k(X)k(U) = k(X). k(X)k(X) is a function field over kk in the algebraic sense: a finitely generated field extension of kk.

Example: k(𝔸n)=k(x1,…,xn)k(\mathbb{A}^n) = k(x_1, \dots, x_n), the field of rational functions, since k[𝔸n]k[\mathbb{A}^n] is the polynomial ring. Example: for the parabola X=V(y−x2)X = V(y - x^2), k[X]≅k[x]k[X] \cong k[x], so k(X)≅k(x)k(X) \cong k(x).

Non-example: the construction needs irreducibility. In X=V(xy)⊆k2X = V(xy) \subseteq k^2, the open sets {x≠0}\set{x \ne 0} and {y≠0}\set{y \ne 0} of XX are nonempty and disjoint. So the relation above is not transitive there, and the analogous ring built from k[X]=k[x,y]/(xy)k[X] = k[x, y]/(xy), its total ring of fractions, is k(x)×k(y)k(x) \times k(y), which is not a field.
