Function space

Example

Let FF be a field, let XX be a set, and let VV be a vector space over FF. The set VXV^X of all functions f ⁣:X→Vf \colon X \to V is a vector space over FF with the pointwise operations (f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x),(af)(x)=a f(x)(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x), \qquad (af)(x) = a\, f(x) for f,g∈VXf, g \in V^X, a∈Fa \in F and x∈Xx \in X. The zero vector is the function with value 00 at each point.

Remarks

For X={1,…,n}X = \{1, \dots, n\} and V=FV = F, this is the coordinate space FnF^n. The continuous functions [0,1]→R[0, 1] \to \R form a subspace of R[0,1]\R^{[0, 1]}. If XX is infinite and V≠0V \ne 0, then VXV^X is infinite-dimensional.

Explanations

L1 human

We add two functions by adding their values at each point. We scale a function by scaling its values. With these rules, functions behave like vectors, and the zero function is the zero vector.

What this node needs for W3
  • a person confirmed each agent-written section: rule P04 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
