Functional equation of the Riemann zeta function
Builds on Riemann zeta functionGamma functionMeromorphic function
Statement
Let be the Riemann zeta function and the gamma function. Then, as an identity of meromorphic functions on , Equivalently, the completed zeta function satisfies for all .
Remarks
One proof uses the theta function for . Poisson summation gives . A Mellin transform expresses as an integral of against . Splitting the integral at and using the symmetry of gives a formula that is visibly invariant under . The same formula gives the meromorphic continuation of to . Example: at the right side is , using , so . At the sine factor vanishes while is finite and nonzero, so these are zeros of , the trivial zeros.
Going deeper
For a student
The equation shows that the zeros of with are the trivial zeros . The other zeros lie in the critical strip , placed symmetrically about the line . The Riemann hypothesis says that they lie on this line. Dirichlet L-functions of primitive characters and many other L-functions satisfy functional equations of the same shape.
