Definition
Let be a pointed space and let . A loop at is a continuous map with . For loops and at , the concatenation is the loop with for and for . The fundamental group is the set of path homotopy classes of loops at , with the product .
Remarks
The product is well defined, and it makes a group. The identity is the class of the constant loop, and the inverse of is the class of the reversed loop . A pointed map induces a homomorphism , . If is path-connected, the group does not depend on up to isomorphism. Example: for a convex set and , every loop is path homotopic to the constant loop by the straight-line homotopy, so is trivial. Non-example: loops themselves, without passing to classes, do not form a group under concatenation. Indeed and are in general different maps, which agree only up to path homotopy. A path-connected space with trivial fundamental group is simply connected.
