Definition
On with coordinates , write and let The group is the group of linear maps with . It is a compact Lie group of dimension contained in .
Let be a connected Riemannian manifold of dimension . Identify the tangent space at a point with by a suitable linear isomorphism. The manifold is a manifold if its holonomy group is then contained in .
Remarks
Equivalently, carries a -form that agrees with at each point in suitable linear coordinates, that determines , and that is parallel for the Levi-Civita connection. Such a is a -structure, and it is parallel exactly when and , where is the Hodge star of .
Example: with the Euclidean metric and ; the form has constant coefficients, so it is parallel and the holonomy is trivial. The flat torus is a compact example with the same form.
Non-example: the round sphere is not a manifold. A metric with holonomy in is Ricci-flat, while the round metric has positive Ricci curvature.
Compact manifolds with holonomy exactly were first constructed by Joyce, by resolving singularities of quotients of by finite groups.
