Definition

Let KK be a field with separable closure KsepK^{\mathrm{sep}}, and let GK=Gal⁡(Ksep/K)G_K = \Gal(K^{\mathrm{sep}}/K) be its absolute Galois group with the Krull topology, a profinite group. Let AA be a topological commutative ring and let n≥1n \ge 1. Typical choices of AA are ℂ\C, a finite field, ℤℓ\Z_\ell, or a finite extension of ℚℓ\Q_\ell. Give the general linear group GLn(A)\mathrm{GL}_n(A) the topology induced from An2A^{n^2}. A Galois representation of KK of dimension nn over AA is a continuous group homomorphism ρ ⁣:GK→GLn(A)\rho \colon G_K \to \mathrm{GL}_n(A).

Remarks

Equivalently, it is a continuous action of GKG_K on a free AA-module of rank nn, by AA-linear maps. Two representations are isomorphic if they are conjugate by a matrix of GLn(A)\mathrm{GL}_n(A).

Example: let ℓ\ell be a prime different from the characteristic of KK. The ℓ\ell-adic cyclotomic character χℓ ⁣:GK→ℤℓ×=GL1(ℤℓ)\chi_\ell \colon G_K \to \Z_\ell^\times = \mathrm{GL}_1(\Z_\ell) is given by σ(ζ)=ζχℓ(σ) mod ℓk\sigma(\zeta) = \zeta^{\chi_\ell(\sigma) \bmod \ell^k}. This holds for all kk and every root of unity ζ\zeta of order dividing ℓk\ell^k. It is a homomorphism, and it is continuous because its reduction modulo ℓk\ell^k factors through the finite quotient Gal⁡(K(μℓk)/K)\Gal(K(\mu_{\ell^k})/K). Another example: the Tate module Tℓ(E)=lim←⁡E[ℓk]T_\ell(E) = \varprojlim E[\ell^k] of an elliptic curve EE over KK gives a 22-dimensional representation over ℤℓ\Z_\ell.

Non-example: the constant map GK→GLn(A)G_K \to \mathrm{GL}_n(A) with value −I-I, for AA of characteristic not 22, is continuous but sends the identity to −I≠I-I \ne I, so it is not a homomorphism.

With A=ℂA = \C and its usual topology, every continuous representation has finite image; these are the Artin representations. For KK a number field, a Galois representation is unramified at a finite place vv if it is trivial on the inertia group at vv. Then the image of a Frobenius element at vv is defined up to conjugacy.
