Gamow factor
Builds on Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution
Definition
Consider two nuclei with charge numbers and reduced mass , colliding with energy in their centre-of-mass frame. Let be the fine-structure constant and the speed of light. The Gamow energy of the pair is and the Gamow factor at energy is
Remarks
The Gamow factor approximates the probability of tunnelling through the Coulomb barrier when is much smaller than the height of the barrier. With the relative speed and , it equals , where is the Sommerfeld parameter; indeed . Example: for two protons, is half the proton mass, so and ; at , typical in the core of the Sun, , about . Non-example: a neutron and a nucleus have , which the definition excludes; there is no Coulomb barrier, and no Gamow factor applies. Multiplied by the Maxwell–Boltzmann weight , the Gamow factor gives the Gamow peak, whose maximum lies at .
