Definition
Let be a finite field with elements. A multiplicative character of is a group homomorphism ; it is extended to by . An additive character of is a group homomorphism . The Gauss sum of and is
Remarks
The most common case is for a prime and with ; one then writes . If and are both nontrivial, then .
Example: let and let be the Legendre symbol modulo , so and . Then , and , in line with the general rule for the quadratic character.
Non-example: the sum is not a Gauss sum in this sense, because is not additive, so it is not an additive character.
For a Dirichlet character modulo one defines in the same way .
