Definition
Let be a field and let be an associative algebra over with identity. For a finite-dimensional subspace and , let be the span of all products of elements of . The Gelfand–Kirillov dimension of is where the supremum runs over all finite-dimensional subspaces of and is the limit superior. It is a number in .
Remarks
If is finitely generated and is a finite-dimensional generating subspace with , then the supremum is attained at : , where is the growth function of . So depends only on the growth of .
Example: let be a polynomial ring and . The space is spanned by the monomials of degree at most , so , which is a polynomial of degree in . Hence .
Example: if is finite-dimensional, then for all , so .
Non-example of finiteness: for the free algebra and , one has . Then , so .
The base of the logarithm does not matter, because only the ratio of two logarithms appears.
