Builds on State on a C*-algebraHilbert space

Definition

Let AA be a unital C*-algebra and let ρ\rho be a state on AA, a positive linear functional with ρ(1)=1\rho(1) = 1. The GNS construction for ρ\rho is the triple (Hρ,πρ,ξρ)(H_\rho, \pi_\rho, \xi_\rho) defined as follows.

  1. The set Nρ={a∈A:ρ(a∗a)=0}N_\rho = \set{a \in A : \rho(a^*a) = 0} is a closed left ideal of AA, and ⟨a+Nρ,b+Nρ⟩=ρ(b∗a)\ip{a + N_\rho}{b + N_\rho} = \rho(b^*a) is an inner product on A/NρA/N_\rho.
  2. HρH_\rho is the Hilbert space completion of A/NρA/N_\rho for this inner product.
  3. For a∈Aa \in A, πρ(a)\pi_\rho(a) is the bounded operator on HρH_\rho that extends b+Nρ↦ab+Nρb + N_\rho \mapsto ab + N_\rho.
  4. ξρ=1+Nρ\xi_\rho = 1 + N_\rho.

Remarks

Then πρ\pi_\rho is a ∗*-representation of AA, the vector ξρ\xi_\rho is cyclic, that is, πρ(A)ξρ\pi_\rho(A)\xi_\rho is dense in HρH_\rho, and ρ(a)=⟨πρ(a)ξρ,ξρ⟩\rho(a) = \ip{\pi_\rho(a)\xi_\rho}{\xi_\rho} for all a∈Aa \in A. Any other cyclic representation with a cyclic vector ξ\xi satisfying ρ(a)=⟨π(a)ξ,ξ⟩\rho(a) = \ip{\pi(a)\xi}{\xi} is unitarily equivalent to πρ\pi_\rho by a unitary sending ξ\xi to ξρ\xi_\rho. The boundedness in clause 3 comes from ρ(b∗a∗ab)≤∥a∥2ρ(b∗b)\rho(b^*a^*ab) \le \norm{a}^2 \rho(b^*b).

Example: A=C[0,1]A = C[0, 1] and ρ(f)=∫01f(x) dx\rho(f) = \int_0^1 f(x) \, dx. Then Nρ={0}N_\rho = \set{0}, since ∫01∣f∣2 dx=0\int_0^1 \abs{f}^2 \, dx = 0 forces a continuous ff to vanish, and the inner product is ∫01fg‾ dx\int_0^1 f \overline{g} \, dx. So Hρ=L2[0,1]H_\rho = L^2[0, 1], πρ(f)\pi_\rho(f) is multiplication by ff and ξρ\xi_\rho is the constant function 11.

Non-example: the functional σ(f)=−f(0)\sigma(f) = -f(0) on C[0,1]C[0, 1] is linear but not a state, and the construction fails at clause 1. The form ⟨a,b⟩=σ(b∗a)\ip{a}{b} = \sigma(b^*a) gives ⟨1,1⟩=−1<0\ip{1}{1} = -1 < 0, so it is not an inner product.

For a non-unital C*-algebra the construction works in the same way for positive functionals, with the cyclic vector obtained from an approximate unit.
