Gelfand pair

Summary

A Gelfand pair is a locally compact group GG with a compact subgroup KK such that convolution of KK-bi-invariant functions on GG is commutative. Equivalently, each irreducible unitary representation of GG has at most a one-dimensional space of KK-fixed vectors. For a Gelfand pair, harmonic analysis on the homogeneous space G/KG/K is governed by spherical functions. They play the role of the exponentials in Fourier analysis. Examples are (SO(3),SO(2))(\mathrm{SO}(3), \mathrm{SO}(2)), related to the sphere, and (SL2(ℝ),SO(2))(\mathrm{SL}_2(\R), \mathrm{SO}(2)), related to the hyperbolic plane.
