Abstract harmonic analysis Definition
Spherical function
Definition
Let be a Gelfand pair, and let be the Haar measure on of total mass . A spherical function for is a continuous function such that:
- for all and ;
- ;
- for all .
Remarks
Example: and , a Gelfand pair since is abelian. Clause 1 is empty, and clause 3 reads . So the spherical functions are with , and clause 2 holds since . The positive-definite ones are the unitary characters with .
Non-example: on fails clause 2, and also clause 3, since .
For , the spherical functions are , where is the angle between and . Here is the Legendre polynomial of degree .
Equivalent form: a continuous -bi-invariant is spherical exactly when is multiplicative on . If is an irreducible unitary representation with a unit -fixed vector , then is a positive-definite spherical function.
