Continuity at a point

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function, and let a∈Da \in D. The function ff is continuous at aa if the following holds. For each open interval VV containing f(a)f(a) there is an open interval UU containing aa with f(x)∈Vf(x) \in V for all x∈U∩Dx \in U \cap D.

Remarks

If aa is a limit point of DD, then ff is continuous at aa if and only if lim⁡x→af(x)=f(a)\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = f(a). See limit of a function. If aa is an isolated point of DD, then each function on DD is continuous at aa. The epsilon-delta form states the same condition with numbers. Mathlib defines it for topological spaces, as ContinuousAt.

Explanations

L1 human

A function is continuous at aa if small changes of xx near aa give small changes of f(x)f(x). The graph has no jump or gap at aa.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level

  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition

What depends on this

141 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
