statement proposition

The logarithm is strictly concave

Statement

The natural logarithm is strictly concave on (0,∞)(0, \infty). That is, ln⁡(tx+(1−t)y)>tln⁡x+(1−t)ln⁡y\ln(t x + (1 - t) y) > t \ln x + (1 - t) \ln y for all x≠yx \ne y in (0,∞)(0, \infty) and t∈(0,1)t \in (0, 1).

Remarks

The derivative of ln⁡x\ln x is 1/x1/x, and its second derivative is −1/x2<0-1/x^2 < 0. The concavity gives the AM–GM inequality through Jensen's inequality. Mathlib states it as strictConcaveOn_log_Ioi.

Explanations

L1 human

The graph of ln⁡x\ln x bends downward everywhere. Every chord of the graph lies below the graph.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
