statement proposition

Composition of continuous functions is continuous

Statement

Let D,E⊆RD, E \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function with f(D)⊆Ef(D) \subseteq E, and let g ⁣:E→Rg \colon E \to \mathbb{R}. If ff is continuous at a∈Da \in D and gg is continuous at f(a)f(a), then g∘fg \circ f is continuous at aa. In particular, if ff and gg are continuous, then g∘fg \circ f is continuous.

Remarks

Given ε>0\varepsilon > 0, choose η>0\eta > 0 for gg at f(a)f(a), and then δ>0\delta > 0 for ff at aa and the tolerance η\eta. See the epsilon-delta form. For example, x↦sin⁡(x2)x \mapsto \sin(x^2) is continuous. Mathlib states it for topological spaces, as Continuous.comp.

Explanations

L1 human

A small change of xx gives a small change of f(x)f(x). This in turn gives a small change of g(f(x))g(f(x)).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Continuous function definition
  5. Epsilon-delta definition of continuity statement
  6. Composition of continuous functions is continuous statement

What depends on this

17 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
