statement proposition

Epsilon-delta definition of continuity

Statement

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Da \in D. Then ff is continuous at aa if and only if the following holds. For each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 with ∣f(x)−f(a)∣<ε|f(x) - f(a)| < \varepsilon for all x∈Dx \in D with ∣x−a∣<δ|x - a| < \delta.

Remarks

Each open interval around a point contains an interval of the form (c−r,c+r)(c - r, c + r) with r>0r > 0. This gives the equivalence. Many texts take this condition as the definition of continuity. Mathlib states a form for metric spaces as Metric.continuousAt_iff.

Explanations

L1 human

For each allowed error ε\varepsilon in the output, there is a tolerance δ\delta in the input. Inputs within δ\delta of aa give outputs within ε\varepsilon of f(a)f(a).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Epsilon-delta definition of continuity statement

What depends on this

33 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
