statement theorem

Continuity is equivalent to sequential continuity

Statement

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R} and let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R} be a function. Then ff is continuous if and only if ff is sequentially continuous.

Remarks

The forward direction follows from the epsilon-delta form of continuity. For the converse, suppose that ff is not continuous at aa. Then there is ε>0\varepsilon > 0 and for each nn a point xnx_n with ∣xn−a∣<1/n|x_n - a| < 1/n and ∣f(xn)−f(a)∣≥ε|f(x_n) - f(a)| \ge \varepsilon. The equivalence holds in all metric spaces. Mathlib states it for sequential spaces, as continuous_iff_seqContinuous.

Explanations

L1 human

We can test continuity with sequences. A function is continuous exactly when it sends every convergent sequence to a convergent sequence with the right limit.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

6 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
