Limit of a function
Definition
Let be a subset of , let be a function, and let be a limit point of . A real number is the limit of at if the following holds. For each open interval containing there is an open interval containing with for all with . The notation is , or as .
Remarks
The value of at plays no role, and need not lie in .
The epsilon-delta definition states the same condition with numbers. The sequential characterization states it with sequences.
The limit is unique when it exists, since is a limit point of .
Mathlib expresses limits with filters, as Filter.Tendsto.
Explanations
L1 human
The limit of at is the value that approaches as comes close to . Only the values near matter, not the value at itself.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
What this needs
To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.
