Thomae's function

Example

Define f ⁣:R→Rf \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} as follows. For irrational xx, f(x)=0f(x) = 0. For rational x=p/qx = p/q in lowest terms with q>0q > 0, f(x)=1/qf(x) = 1/q. Then ff is continuous at each irrational number and discontinuous at each rational number.

Remarks

Let aa be irrational and let ε>0\varepsilon > 0. Only finitely many p/qp/q near aa have 1/q≥ε1/q \ge \varepsilon. So f(x)<εf(x) < \varepsilon for all xx close enough to aa. At a rational aa, irrational points near aa have value 00, but f(a)>0f(a) > 0. The function is periodic with period 11. No function on R\mathbb{R} is continuous exactly at the rationals.

Explanations

L1 human

The value 1/q1/q is small when the denominator qq is large. Near an irrational point, all rationals have large denominators, so the values there are small.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or not_instance_of or illustrates out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
