Real exponentiation

Definition

Let a>0a > 0 and let xx be a real number. The power axa^x is ax=exln⁡a.a^x = e^{x \ln a}.

Remarks

For natural numbers x=nx = n, this agrees with the product of nn factors aa. For x=p/qx = p/q, it agrees with apq\sqrt[q]{a^p}. The usual rules hold: ax+y=axaya^{x + y} = a^x a^y, (ax)y=axy(a^x)^y = a^{x y}, and (ab)x=axbx(a b)^x = a^x b^x. For a=ea = e, it gives ex=exp⁡(x)e^x = \exp(x), since ln⁡e=1\ln e = 1. Mathlib defines Real.rpow with extra conventions for a≤0a \le 0.

Explanations

L1 human

To raise aa to a real power xx, multiply the logarithm of aa by xx and apply the exponential function. This fills in all powers between the rational ones continuously.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
