Natural logarithm

Definition

For a real number x>0x > 0, the natural logarithm ln⁡x\ln x is the unique real number yy with ey=xe^y = x. This defines a function ln⁡ ⁣:(0,∞)→R\ln \colon (0, \infty) \to \mathbb{R}.

Remarks

The number yy exists and is unique, because exp⁡\exp is a strictly increasing continuous bijection from R\mathbb{R} onto (0,∞)(0, \infty). Some texts define instead ln⁡x=∫1xdtt\ln x = \int_1^x \frac{dt}{t}. Both definitions give the same function. Other notations are log⁡x\log x and log⁡ex\log_e x. Mathlib defines Real.log for all reals, with log⁡x=log⁡∣x∣\log x = \log |x| and log⁡0=0\log 0 = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

The logarithm answers the question: to which power must we raise ee to get xx? For example, ln⁡1=0\ln 1 = 0 and ln⁡e=1\ln e = 1.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
