Local maximum

Definition

Let D⊆RD \subseteq \mathbb{R}, let f ⁣:D→Rf \colon D \to \mathbb{R}, and let a∈Da \in D. The function ff has a local maximum at aa if there is δ>0\delta > 0 with f(x)≤f(a)f(x) \le f(a) for all x∈Dx \in D with ∣x−a∣<δ|x - a| < \delta. It is a strict local maximum if f(x)<f(a)f(x) < f(a) for all such x≠ax \ne a.

Remarks

A global maximum, where f(x)≤f(a)f(x) \le f(a) for all x∈Dx \in D, is also a local maximum. A local minimum is defined with f(x)≥f(a)f(x) \ge f(a). Local maxima and minima are local extrema. At an interior local extremum, a differentiable function has derivative zero. Mathlib defines it as IsLocalMax.

Explanations

L1 human

A local maximum is a hilltop of the graph. Nearby values are not higher, although values far away may be higher.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

80 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
