concept

Indeterminate form

Summary

An indeterminate form is a type of limit where the limits of the parts do not determine the limit of the whole. The seven common forms are 0/00/0, ∞/∞\infty/\infty, 0⋅∞0 \cdot \infty, ∞−∞\infty - \infty, 000^0, 1∞1^{\infty}, and ∞0\infty^0.

Remarks

For example, x→0x \to 0 and x2→0x^2 \to 0, but x2/x→0x^2/x \to 0, x/x→1x/x \to 1, and x/x2x/x^2 has no finite limit. All three are of the form 0/00/0. L'Hôpital's rule treats the forms 0/00/0 and ∞/∞\infty/\infty. Logarithms turn the forms 000^0, 1∞1^{\infty}, and ∞0\infty^0 into the form 0⋅∞0 \cdot \infty. Forms such as 1/0+1/0^+ and 0∞0^{\infty} are not indeterminate.

Explanations

L1 human

Some limits cannot be found by plugging in the limits of the parts. Then a finer analysis is needed, because many different answers are possible.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
