statement theorem

L'Hôpital's rule

Statement

Let II be an open interval and let c∈Ic \in I. Let f,gf, g be real functions differentiable on I∖{c}I \setminus \{c\}, with g′(x)≠0g'(x) \ne 0 for all x∈I∖{c}x \in I \setminus \{c\}. Assume that f(x)→0f(x) \to 0 and g(x)→0g(x) \to 0 as x→cx \to c, and that f′(x)/g′(x)→Lf'(x)/g'(x) \to L as x→cx \to c. Then f(x)/g(x)→Lf(x)/g(x) \to L as x→cx \to c.

Remarks

The proof uses the Cauchy mean value theorem on intervals between cc and xx. Similar forms hold for the indeterminate form ∞/∞\infty/\infty, for one-sided limits, and for x→±∞x \to \pm\infty. For example, lim⁡x→01−cos⁡xx2=lim⁡x→0sin⁡x2x=12\lim_{x \to 0} \frac{1 - \cos x}{x^2} = \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{\sin x}{2x} = \frac{1}{2}. Mathlib states a form as deriv.lhopital_zero_nhds.

History

Johann Bernoulli found the rule and sent it to Guillaume de l'Hôpital in a letter of 1694. L'Hôpital published it in his textbook of 1696.

Explanations

L1 human

Near cc, both ff and gg are close to their tangent lines through (c,0)(c, 0). So their ratio is close to the ratio of their slopes.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
