statement proposition

Integral of a power

Statement

Let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer and let a,b∈Ra, b \in \mathbb{R}. Then ∫abxn dx=bn+1−an+1n+1.\int_a^b x^n \, dx = \frac{b^{n+1} - a^{n+1}}{n + 1}.

Remarks

By the power rule, xn+1/(n+1)x^{n+1}/(n + 1) is an antiderivative of xnx^n. Apply the second fundamental theorem. The same formula holds for each real exponent r≠−1r \ne -1, on intervals inside (0,∞)(0, \infty). The case r=−1r = -1 gives the logarithm. Mathlib states it as integral_pow.

Explanations

L1 human

To integrate xnx^n, raise the power by one and divide by the new power. For example, ∫01x2 dx=1/3\int_0^1 x^2 \, dx = 1/3.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
