definition

Riemann sum

Definition

Let a<ba < b, let f ⁣:[a,b]→Rf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R}, and let P=(x0,…,xn)P = (x_0, \dots, x_n) be a partition of [a,b][a, b]. Let t=(t1,…,tn)t = (t_1, \dots, t_n) be tags with ti∈[xi−1,xi]t_i \in [x_{i-1}, x_i] for each ii. The Riemann sum of ff for the tagged partition (P,t)(P, t) is S(f,P,t)=∑i=1nf(ti)(xi−xi−1).S(f, P, t) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} f(t_i) (x_i - x_{i-1}).

Remarks

The left rule takes ti=xi−1t_i = x_{i-1}, the right rule takes ti=xit_i = x_i, and the midpoint rule takes the midpoints. For bounded ff, each Riemann sum lies between the lower and the upper Darboux sum for PP. Mathlib has a general form for boxes, BoxIntegral.integralSum.

Explanations

L1 human

A Riemann sum adds up areas of rectangles. Each rectangle stands on a piece of the partition, and its height is the value of ff at the chosen tag.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Partition of an interval definition
  2. Riemann sum definition

What depends on this

48 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
