definition

Riemann integral

Definition

Let a<ba < b and let f ⁣:[a,b]→Rf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R} be Riemann integrable. The Riemann integral of ff over [a,b][a, b] is the unique number II in the definition of Riemann integrability. It is written ∫abf(x) dx.\int_a^b f(x) \, dx.

Remarks

For f≥0f \ge 0, the integral equals the area under the graph of ff and above the xx-axis. By convention, ∫aaf=0\int_a^a f = 0 and ∫baf=−∫abf\int_b^a f = -\int_a^b f. The fundamental theorem of calculus computes the integral from an antiderivative. The integral is named after Bernhard Riemann.

Explanations

L1 human

The Riemann integral is the limit of sums of areas of thin rectangles under the graph. It gives the signed area between the graph and the xx-axis.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
