statement theorem

Extreme value theorem

Statement

Let a≤ba \le b and let f ⁣:[a,b]→Rf \colon [a, b] \to \mathbb{R} be continuous. Then there are c,d∈[a,b]c, d \in [a, b] with f(c)≤f(x)≤f(d)f(c) \le f(x) \le f(d) for all x∈[a,b]x \in [a, b].

Remarks

By the boundedness theorem, M=sup⁡f([a,b])M = \sup f([a, b]) is finite. If f(x)<Mf(x) < M for all xx, then 1/(M−f(x))1/(M - f(x)) is continuous and unbounded, which is a contradiction. Each hypothesis is needed. The function xx on [0,1)[0, 1) has no maximum, and xx on [0,∞)[0, \infty) is not bounded above. Mathlib states it for compact sets, as IsCompact.exists_isMinOn and IsCompact.exists_isMaxOn.

History

Bernard Bolzano proved the theorem in the 1830s. His proof stayed unpublished until 1930.

Explanations

L1 human

On a closed bounded interval, a continuous function has a highest value and a lowest value. Its graph has a top point and a bottom point.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)
  • explanation L2 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 16 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
