statement corollary

A function with nonnegative derivative is increasing

Statement

Let II be an interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be continuous, and differentiable at each interior point of II. If f′(x)≥0f'(x) \ge 0 for each interior point xx of II, then ff is increasing on II. That is, f(x)≤f(y)f(x) \le f(y) for x≤yx \le y in II.

Remarks

The proof uses the mean value theorem. For differentiable ff on an open interval, the converse holds too: if ff is increasing, then f′≥0f' \ge 0. Mathlib states it as monotoneOn_of_deriv_nonneg.

If the slope is never negative, the graph never goes down. It may stay flat on some parts.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
