statement corollary

A function with nonnegative second derivative is convex

Statement

Let II be an open interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be twice differentiable. If f′′(x)≥0f''(x) \ge 0 for all x∈Ix \in I, then ff is convex.

Remarks

The derivative f′f' has a nonnegative derivative, so f′f' is increasing. Then convexity follows. If f′′>0f'' > 0 on II, then ff is strictly convex. The converse fails: x4x^4 is strictly convex, but its second derivative at 00 is 00. Mathlib states it as convexOn_of_deriv2_nonneg.

Explanations

L1 human

A nonnegative second derivative means that the slope never decreases. So the graph bends upward everywhere.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
