statement proposition

Slopes of a convex function are increasing

Statement

Let II be an interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be convex. Then for all x<y<zx < y < z in II, f(y)−f(x)y−x≤f(z)−f(x)z−x≤f(z)−f(y)z−y.\frac{f(y) - f(x)}{y - x} \le \frac{f(z) - f(x)}{z - x} \le \frac{f(z) - f(y)}{z - y}.

Remarks

Write y=tx+(1−t)zy = t x + (1 - t) z with t=(z−y)/(z−x)t = (z - y)/(z - x), and apply the definition of convexity. The converse holds: a function with this property is convex. The first and the last quotient give the adjacent form ConvexOn.slope_mono_adjacent of Mathlib.

Explanations

L1 human

For a convex function, chords further to the right are steeper. So the slopes of the graph increase from left to right.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

6 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
