Convex function

Definition

Let II be an interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be a function. The function ff is convex if f(tx+(1−t)y)≤tf(x)+(1−t)f(y)f(t x + (1 - t) y) \le t f(x) + (1 - t) f(y) for all x,y∈Ix, y \in I and all t∈[0,1]t \in [0, 1].

Remarks

Geometrically, each chord of the graph lies on or above the graph. For example, x2x^2, ∣x∣|x|, and exe^x are convex on R\mathbb{R}. Linear functions are convex. A twice differentiable function with f′′≥0f'' \ge 0 is convex. Mathlib defines convexity on a set as ConvexOn.

Explanations

L1 human

A convex function bends upward, like a bowl. The straight segment between two points of the graph never goes below the graph.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

12 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
