statement theorem

A differentiable function is convex iff its derivative is increasing

Statement

Let II be an open interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be differentiable. Then ff is convex if and only if f′f' is increasing on II.

Remarks

If ff is convex, the slope inequalities give f′(x)≤f′(y)f'(x) \le f'(y) for x<yx < y. If f′f' is increasing, the mean value theorem on [x,y][x, y] and [y,z][y, z] gives the slope inequalities. Then the graph lies above each tangent line: f(y)≥f(x)+f′(x)(y−x)f(y) \ge f(x) + f'(x)(y - x). Mathlib states the converse direction as MonotoneOn.convexOn_of_deriv.

Explanations

L1 human

A differentiable function is convex when its slope keeps growing. The graph then turns to the left as we move along it to the right.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
