definition

Second derivative

Definition

Let II be an open interval and let f ⁣:I→Rf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be differentiable on II. If f′f' is differentiable at a∈Ia \in I, the second derivative of ff at aa is f′′(a)=(f′)′(a)f''(a) = (f')'(a).

Remarks

It is the higher derivative f(2)f^{(2)}. Another notation is d2fdx2\frac{d^2 f}{dx^2}. If f′′>0f'' > 0 on II, then ff is convex on II. In mechanics, if f(t)f(t) is the position at time tt, then f′′(t)f''(t) is the acceleration.

Explanations

L1 human

The second derivative is the rate of change of the slope. It tells how the graph bends: upward where f′′>0f'' > 0 and downward where f′′<0f'' < 0.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

  7. Second derivative definition

What depends on this

5 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
