statement theorem

Product rule

Statement

Let ff and gg be real functions on an open interval II, both differentiable at a∈Ia \in I. Then fgf g is differentiable at aa, and (fg)′(a)=f′(a)g(a)+f(a)g′(a).(f g)'(a) = f'(a) g(a) + f(a) g'(a).

Remarks

Write f(a+h)g(a+h)−f(a)g(a)=(f(a+h)−f(a))g(a+h)+f(a)(g(a+h)−g(a))f(a + h) g(a + h) - f(a) g(a) = (f(a + h) - f(a)) g(a + h) + f(a) (g(a + h) - g(a)). Divide by hh and use the continuity of gg at aa. For example, (xsin⁡x)′=sin⁡x+xcos⁡x(x \sin x)' = \sin x + x \cos x. Mathlib states it as HasDerivAt.mul.

History

The discovery of the rule is credited to Gottfried Leibniz.

Explanations

L1 human

Think of fgf g as the area of a rectangle with sides ff and gg. When both sides grow a little, the area grows by f′g+fg′f' g + f g', up to a tiny corner piece.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)
  • edge proves in: at least one proof node (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of or illustrates in: one example that shows the statement at work (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 7 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Limit point of a set definition
  2. Limit of a function definition
  3. Continuity at a point definition
  4. Derivative definition
  5. Differentiable function definition
  6. Differentiable functions are continuous statement
  7. Product rule statement

What depends on this

17 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
