statement proposition

Power rule

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 be a natural number. Then the function x↦xnx \mapsto x^n is differentiable on R\mathbb{R}, and its derivative at xx is nxn−1n x^{n-1}.

Remarks

Induction on nn with the product rule gives (xn+1)′=(xn⋅x)′=nxn−1⋅x+xn=(n+1)xn(x^{n+1})' = (x^n \cdot x)' = n x^{n-1} \cdot x + x^n = (n + 1) x^n. The same formula holds for negative integers nn when x≠0x \ne 0, and for real exponents when x>0x > 0. Mathlib states it as hasDerivAt_pow.

Explanations

L1 human

To differentiate a power, bring the exponent down as a factor and lower the exponent by one. For example, the derivative of x5x^5 is 5x45 x^4.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
