Exponential function

Definition

The exponential function exp⁡ ⁣:R→R\exp \colon \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} is defined by exp⁡(x)=∑n=0∞xnn!=1+x+x22+x36+⋯ .\exp(x) = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} \frac{x^n}{n!} = 1 + x + \frac{x^2}{2} + \frac{x^3}{6} + \cdots.

Remarks

The power series converges absolutely for every real xx, because its radius of convergence is infinite. One also writes exe^x for exp⁡(x)\exp(x), where e=exp⁡(1)e = \exp(1) is the number e. Other common definitions use the limit lim⁡n→∞(1+x/n)n\lim_{n \to \infty} (1 + x/n)^n, or the equation f′=ff' = f with f(0)=1f(0) = 1. They give the same function. Mathlib defines Real.exp as the real part of the complex exponential series.

Explanations

L1 human

The exponential function is an infinite polynomial with the coefficients 1/n!1/n!. It grows faster than every polynomial, and its derivative is itself.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
